SOUTH AFRICA: Lawmakers Ask SARB to Look at "Issue of the High Interest Rate"

  • South Africa’s standing committee on finance has called on the SARB to “seriously look at the issue of the high interest rate which is making life difficult for both the poor and middle-income earners,” according to an emailed statement from parliament cited by Bloomberg.
  • The committee is raising this matter “not to instruct the central bank to lower the interest rate, but to consider it an issue that is mostly affecting ordinary people on the ground,” chairman Joe Maswanganyi says.
  • The headlines prompted a solid spike higher for USD/ZAR, through earlier session highs with the pair reaching its highest level of the week. While some of its gains have since moderated, the pair remains around 0.4% in the green.
