SOUTH AFRICA: MK Party Keeps Zuma As Leader, National Tsy Holds Linkers Auction

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The uMkonto weSizwe (MK) Party kept ex-President Jacob Zuma as its leader, while also reappointing ex-judge John Hlophe as deputy leader. Former deputy leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Floyd Shivambu, whose recent defection to the MK Party caused much controversy, was tapped to become the party's "national organiser" - a position equivalent to that of a secretary general, responsible for policy research and monitoring. Separately, EFF executives will hold their first meeting since Shivambu's exit this weekend to chart the path forward. Shivambu's defection has provoked questions about the future of the opposition Progressive Caucus consisting of the MK Party, the EFF and several minor parties.
  • According to eNCA, Statistician General Risenga Maluleke "clarified that no employment, or mortality data was retracted and explained that the data in question was never published." This comes after Statistics SA deemed some of the data from the 2022 census unsuitable for publication due to flaws in the collection process.
  • The National Treasury will offer ZAR1bn worth of 2031, 2038 and 2046 inflation-linked bonds at an auction today. This comes after the release of below-forecast inflation data on Wednesday, which fuelled bets on a 25bp SARB rate cut in September.
