SOUTH AFRICA: Nasiphi Moya Elected Tshwane Mayor, Mining & M'fing Data On Tap
SOUTH AFRICA
- ActionSA's Nasiphi Moya was elected Tshwane Mayor with the support of the African National Congress (ANC), defeating Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Cilliers Brink with 122 votes to 86. The ANC refused to bow to the pressure from DA Federal Chair Helen Zille, who warned that a failure to reinstate Brink as Tshwane Mayor would put talks on cooperation in other metro areas on the line. The situation exposed a rift between the ANC's national headquarters represented by Secretary General Fikile Mbalula and the party's Gauteng division led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi over collaboration with the DA, despite efforts to create an impression of unity. Moya's election triggered talks to form a new government in Tshwane.
