SOUTH AFRICA: Ramokgopa Claims Solving Loadshedding Is Within Touching Distance

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) confirmed that it will prepare an "elective conference roadmap" by the end of this month, with the ultimate aim of electing a new leader. A tight race for the top job between incumbent Velenkosini Hlabisa, who also serves as Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli is expected. Ntuli leads a provincial coalition government, which managed to keep the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party out of power, even as it garnered the largest share of vote in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Energy and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that "loadshedding is not behind us," even as "we are within touching distance" of resolving the issue. The official reminded that "in the next three weeks or so, Eskom will be sharing what the summer outlook is," which should shed more light on the situation of the grid. He spoke as South Africa marked the 137th day without rolling blackouts.
  • South Africa will release June mining production data at 10:00BST/11:00SAST. Unemployment data for Q2 is due for release at 10:30BST/11:30SAST.
  • The National Treasury will sell ZAR1.25bn of 8.25% 2032 bonds, ZAR1.25bn of 8.875% 2035 bonds and ZAR1.25bn of 8.50% 2037 bonds.
