SOUTH AFRICA: Tshwane Mayor Gets Ousted, National Tsy Sells Linkers

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Cilliers Brink was ousted as Mayor of Tshwane, a metropolitan municipality centred around Pretoria, as the coalition ruling South Africa's capital collapsed. Brink lost a motion of no confidence backed by the African National Congress (ANC), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), ActionSA and several smaller parties. The Mayor's ouster was made possible after ActionSA pulled out of the local coalition and expressed interest in working with the ANC. The Thswane Concil now has 14 days to elect the new Mayor. The ANC and ActionSA are expected to field a joint candidate.
  • The Mail & Guardian reported that Justice Minister Thembi Simelane likely "reiterated the account of events she gave parliament’s portfolio committee on justice on 6 September" when she was interviewed by the ANC's integrity commission earlier this week.
  • The National Treasury will offer 1.875% 2033, 5.125% 2043 and 2.500% 2050 inflation-linked bonds at an auction today.
