Spanish Hydro Stocks Decline For Sixth Week

Spain’s hydropower reserves last week declined for the sixth consecutive week to 61.8% of capacity, down from 62.7% of capacity the week before according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Spanish hydropower output last week declined by 709MW on the week to 3.42GW.
  • Nuclear generation last week was stable at 6.99GW.
  • Renewables output rebounded last week. Solar PV output increased to 8.54GW, from 6.81GW in the week prior. Onshore wind output increased by 929MW on the week to 6.13GW.
  • Gas-fired generation last week decreased by 637MW to 3.67GW – the lowest since the week in mid-June.
  • Spanish power demand last week rose to 26.98GW, up from 26.44GW the week before.
  • Looking ahead, power demand in Spain this week is forecast to peak at 33.49GW on Thursday, up from a peak of 31.7GW forecasts for the week prior.
  • The latest 6-10 days ECMW operational forecast suggested max temperatures in Madrid are forecast to soar to 36.5C on Thursday and are forecast to reach as high as 43C later this month.
  • The hydro-intensive region of Huesca has seen little precipitation so far this week. However, precipitation is forecast to pick up on 10-13 July to reach 2.73mm – which is above the seasonal normal.
