Spanish Hydro Stocks Fall for Third Consecutive Week

Spanish hydropower reserves last week edged down to 64.3% of capacity, down from 64.7% of capacity the week prior, marking the third week of declines, despite lower hydropower generation and demand, according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Hydro output last week in Spain fell sharply by 1.17GW to 3.52GW.
  • Nuclear generation in Spain last week rose by 1.06GW to 5.82GW. Gas-fired generation declined by 1.08GW to 3.41GW.
  • Solar PV output in Spain rose by 231MW on the week to 7.31GW. Onshore wind output edged down by 222MW to 6.22GW.
  • Spanish power demand last week averaged 24.86GW, down from 25.82GW the week before.
  • Looking ahead, power demand in Spain this week is forecast to peak at 30.49GW on Tuesday, up from a peak of 29.41GW last week.
  • The latest ECMW operational forecast suggested temperatures in Madrid will remain below the seasonal normal until the end of this week, when temperatures will rise above normal. Maximum temperatures in Madrid are forecast to reach 31-32C on Sunday.
