Speaker To Tell President That New Parliamentary Majority Is Ready To Govern
- Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia will meet with President Andrzej Duda at 10:00GMT/11:00CET to discuss his plans for the upcoming parliamentary term and tell the head of state that that there is a clear new majority in the lower house, ready to form the next government. Holownia yesterday used his right to deliver a televised address to the nation, noting that that the vote on his nomination testified to the stability of the new parliamentary majority. He added that each parliamentary group has been allowed to appoint a Deputy Speaker and the seat allocated to the Law and Justice (PiS) party will "wait as long as necessary" after their initial candidate was rejected in a vote. Several lawmakers from the pro-EU coalition have hinted that they could back the candidacy of PiS's Malgorzata Wassermann instead.
- TVN24 reported that most of the Civic Coalition's candidates for ministerial positions have already spoken with the the party's leader Donald Tusk. Much of the list of names is in line with earlier speculation, with several members of Tusk's previous government (Radoslaw Sikorski, Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz) set to return as ministers.
- Acting Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that he would present his proposed Cabinet line-up within 7-8 days. WP reported that he could invite right-wing politicians from outside of Law and Justice to his government, with the former ruling party expected to take a firm anti-EU turn and put it in the centre of their rhetoric.
- Andrzej Domanski, one of the leading candidates for the Finance Minister position, told Radio Zet that the eligibility criteria for an existing mortgage holiday scheme could be tightened. He also said that the 5% VAT rate on food should be restored from next year, which would boost budget revenue.
