Speakers due this week

BOE
  • Chief Economist Huw Pill is due to speak on Monday in New York with the text due to be released at 15:30GMT. The speech is entitled "The UK Economic and Monetary Policy Outlook". Pill has never hawkishly dissented but his previous comments have been on the more hawkish side so it would be significant if he was to avoid using words such as “forceful”. If Pill sounds less hawkish today then market pricing of 43bp for February could fall back.
  • External MPC member Catherine Mann is due to give a lecture at the Manchester Business School on Thursday entitled “Challenges facing the UK economy, challenges facing monetary policy: a comparative look.” There is no text due to be released from the event, and Mann was the sole hawkish dissenter in December looking for a 75bp hike, so even if she still sounds hawkish it would not necessarily be a concern for the market. Again, it might be more significant if she was to sound less hawkish, however.
  • Governor Bailey is also due to make an appearance this week as he moderates a panel at a Riksbank conference entitled “Central bank independence and new risks: climate”. It is unclear whether there will be any opportunity for Bailey to give any views on current monetary policy. The panellists include BOJ Governor Kuroda, BOC Governor Macklem, ECB Executive Board member Schnabel and CEPR President di Mauro.
