Srettha Shares Details On Thailand's Cash Handout Scheme

Wires are carrying comments from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who confirms that Thailand will push ahead with the plan to distribute digital cash handouts, with the scheme set to cover around 50mn people and cost around THB500bn.

  • The Prime Minister says that the cash handout programme will be funded via a special one-time borrowing bill and tighter fiscal discipline. The government expects it to stimulate short-term consumption, which will help reduce the public debt ratio.
  • The programme was the ruling Pheu Thai Party's flagship pre-election pledge. The initial plan was to implement the programme from February 2024 but it hit a snag amid the need to develop a secure system for distributing the money.
