State of Emergency Extended Across Northern Border

PERU
  • Prime Minister Alberto Otarola announced that a state of emergency will be declared along Peru's entire northern border, given the acts of violence registered recently in Ecuador. This extends the measure to additional regions that had already been in force in Northern Tumbes and Piura.
  • Of note, Interior Minister Victor Torres on Wednesday ruled out any consideration of closing the border with Ecuador.
    • "There has not been talk about closing the borders, but there has been indeed talks of reinforcing them, exercising strict control of people and (verifying) their identification, so that no criminal enters the country," he told reporters.
  • Separately, the BCRP are expected by all analysts to cut the reference rate by 25bps to 6.50% on Thursday. A full preview of the decision will be published tomorrow morning.
