Free AccessSwiss Hydro Stocks Rise Above 5-Year Average Amid Heavy Rain
Switzerland’s hydropower reserves last week surged by 10.6 percentage points to 53.2% of capacity as of 24 June, switching to a surplus to the five-year and long-term averages, as heavy precipitation boosted inflows into reserves, BFE data showed.
- Stocks saw the largest weekly increase so far this year of 10.6 points, up from 7 points the week before.
- Reserves rose to a surplus to the five-year average of 1.2 percentage points last week, compared to being at a discount of 3.3 points the week prior.
- Swiss power demand last week averaged 6.36GW, down from 6.42GW the week before.
- Hydropower generation in Switzerland last week increased by 1.04GW to 4.09GW.
- This is despite six of Axpo’s hydropower plants shutting down in recent days after being affected by floods.
- Nuclear generation last week rebounded by 370MW to 1.75GW. Planned works at the 1.02GW Goesgen nuclear are scheduled to end today 12:30CET following spring maintenance.
- Forecasts suggested precipitation in Sion – in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais – will be below the seasonal normal for the remainder of this week, with some precipitation of 7.6mm expected on Sunday.
- Snowpack at the L'Ecreuleuse measuring station in canton Valais – where most Swiss hydropower reserves are stored – was at 145cm on 26 June, down from 188cm on 19 June.
- The Swiss July power base-load contract closed yesterday at €54.44/MWh.
