Swiss Hydro Stocks Switch To Surplus To 5-Year Average

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves last week rose by 2.6 percentage points to 84.5% of capacity as of 4 September and moved to a surplus to the five-year average for the first time in seven weeks, BFE data showed.

  • Hydro stocks last week moved to a surplus of 0.1 percentage points to the five-year average last week, compared with a deficit of 1.8 percentage points a week earlier.
  • Stocks have remained below the long-term average since 1997 by 1.7 percentage points, compared with a deficit of 3 percentage points the week prior.
  • Reserves rose at the fastest pace by 5 percentage points to 87% in the canton of Graubunden, where around 23% of all stocks are located.
  • Weekly increases were driven by above-average precipitation and lower hydropower output. Total hydropower generation fell last week, and output from reservoirs declined by 345MW on the week to 1.71GW.
  • Forecasts for lower precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Sion this week could limit inflows into reserves.
