Swiss Hydro Stocks Widen Deficit to LT-Average

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves rose by 3.3 percentage points last week to 75.4%, or 6,721GWh, as of 7 August, widening the deficit to the long-term average to 2.2 percentage points, BFE data show.

  • This compares to a deficit of 1.7% last week, marking the first week where levels fell below the 1997-2022 average since late April.
  • The largest regional increase was seen in the canton of Valais – where around 45% of the country’s stocks are located – by 165GWh week on week.
  • Higher Swiss hydropower generation has pushed Switzerland to a net power exporter so far this quarter. Higher output and an uptick in Italian power demand so far this quarter has pushed Swiss exports to Italy to the second highest over the past five years of 2.1GW as of 7 August according to Argusmedia.
  • However, exports may decline over the rest of the quarter on falling Swiss generation and higher French nuclear availability.
