Swiss Hydro Stocks Widen Surplus to Five-Year Average

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves declined by 1.4 percentage points last week to 71.3% of capacity as of 8 January, widening the surplus to the five-year and long-term averages, BFE data showed.

  • Stocks widened the surplus to the five-year average to 9.6 points, from 8.2 points the week earlier.
  • The surplus to the long-term average – since 1997 – widened by 1.8 points on the week to 15 points.
  • High snowfall already this year may limit Swiss power imports this quarter, while solid snowpack could see support power exports in the second quarter of this year.
  • Snowpack at the L'Ecreuleuse measuring station in canton Valais was 288cm on 4 January — up from 132cm in 2022 — and already above the maximum recorded in the first quarter of 2023. A total of 143cm of snow fell over the seven days to 4 January, and strong snowpack levels in canton Valais may boost Swiss hydropower generation in the second quarter once snowmelt begins, supporting exports.
