Switzerland Cancels Tender for Capacity Reserve

The Swiss Ministry for Energy said on Tuesday it is planning to cancel the tender for its new power reserve capacity due to high costs.

  • Instead, the government will start direct negotiations with energy providers for the country’s new reserve capacity from 2026.
  • In a tender between July 2023 and March 2024, the government was hoping to recieve offers for 400MW of hydropower reserve capacity from 2026.
  • Five offers for a total capacity of 591MW have been handed in, however, the costs for the power plants have been too high, which is the reason of the cancellation.
