Tensions In Government Coalition Continue, NBP Rate Decision Up This Week

POLAND
  • Super Express reports "unofficially" that junior ruling coalition party Solidarna Polska is considering the threat of voting against the 2023 budget bill amid its ongoing spat with the ruling Law and Justice, chiefly surrounding EU policies. A failure to adopt the budget by the year-end would give the President the option (but not obligation) to dissolve Parliament.
  • Law and Justice leader Kaczynski said that the current fiscal situation does not allow for additional social benefits, effectively pushing back against trade unions' call for the implementation of the "15th monthly pension" and linking the start of retirement with the time spent working rather than a specific retirement age.
  • 40.2% of respondents in an IBRiS poll for Rzeczpospolita said that the Patriot missile systems offered by Germany should be stationed in Poland, with just 12.5% backing Warsaw's proposal to donate them to Ukraine. A source from the German embassy told DGP that in case of a positive decision, the equipment could be shipped to Poland within weeks.
  • The State Assets Ministry brushed away a press report suggesting that copper producer KGHM could be involved in financing Poland's arms production.
  • The local data docket is light this week. The NBP will decide on interest rates this Wednesday and is expected to keep them on hold.
