Thais Dissatisfied With Prawit's Performance, Most Want Snap Election

THAILAND

Around 64% of Thais are "not satisfied at all" or "somewhat dissatisfied" with acting Prime Minister Prawit's performance, according to an opinion poll published by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) on Sunday.

  • Prawit is the leader of Thailand's ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) and serves as a Deputy Prime Minister. In the latter capacity, he became acting Prime Minister after the Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Prayuth pending the clarification of the end-date of his term in office.
  • The Court is set to convene to consider more evidence on Wednesday after last week's deliberations proved inconclusive. There is no set time when the Court has to issue its final ruling. With Prayuth's ability to keep the top job thrown into doubt, Prawit has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the PPRP's prime ministerial candidate in the next general election.
  • Most of the people surveyed by the NIDA (59%) said they were against any Cabinet reshuffle by the acting Prime Minister and a large majority (80%) said they would want Prawit to call a snap election.
  • An early election would risk throwing Thailand into renewed political turmoil with the Constitutional Court yet to rule on Prayuth's eligibility to rule and with the main opposition Pheu Thai Party leading in the polls.
