TMX Pipeline to Create Competition for Iraqi Barrels

OIL

Canada’s Trans Mountain Pipeline is likely to provide competition for Iraqi Basrah Heavy on the Pacific Coast market according to Rystad analysis.

  • “When you look at the yield profile of that crude oil, the distillation profile of that crude oil, it’s very similar to Canadian heavy — so it’s very substitutable,” according to an analyst.
  • US West Coast refiners will likely be incentivised to switch to cheaper Canadian oil, also travelling a shorter distance.
  • The TMX Pipeline is also expected to push higher Canadian volumes into Asia, pressuring grades like Basrah Heavy there too.
  • The pipeline is expected to start commercial operations on May 1.
  • The pipeline will allow Canadian barrels to break away from their heavy dependence on US Midwest and Gulf refiners.
