UK DATA
UK DATA: Today sees the release of UK labour market data, but bear in mind the
lags in the data.
- Unusually, the claimant count data will probably be the more closely watched.
According to the ONS, the collection date for the claimant count was March 12
for today's release (predating the UK lockdown which did not start until March
23). Nevertheless as the less lagged of the datasets released today, the
pre-coronavirus claims situation will be watched. On April 16, the Department of
Work and Pensions reported that it received more than 1.4 million claims for
Universal Credit since March 16, which will show up in next month's data.
- The headline unemployment and average weekly earnings data both refer to the
three months ending February. The world has changed since then, so these data
will be largely ignored.
