Trudeau: Hope For UK FTA By Jan 1

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau speaking to the editor of the FT says that he hopes a trade deal between the UK and Canada can be in place by Jan 1 2021, adding that "it's an easy one", but says the issue is a "lack of bandwidth" within the UK gov't, which has had little experience of negotiating FTAs in the past 40 years, and is trying to negotiate multiple trade deals at once.

  • Canada currently has an FTA in place with the EU. Like the UK's deal with Japan signed last month, the UK will likely seek to roll-over the CETA agreement into a Canada-UK agreement.
