Trump Administration To Leave COVID-19 Aid Negotiations To Congress

WHITE HOUSE

Wires reporting that the Trump administration has announced that it is going to take a step back from COVID-19 stimulus talks, leaving it up to Congress to find a deal.

  • Prior to the election, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and WH Chief of Staff Mark Meadows had engaged frequently with Congressional House and Senate leaderships to talk about a COVID-19 aid package, but no deal was possible.
  • Often the White House proved the middle ground between the large sums demanded by Congressional Democrats and much smaller sums of cash favoured by Congressional Republicans.
  • A 'lame duck' session deal, prior to President-Elect Joe Biden's inauguration in January 2021, seems extremely unlikely given the stark difference in amounts each side seems to favour for an aid package (Dems in excess of UD3trn, Reps under USD1trn).
  • The Trump administration stepping back from talks could be indicative of a relatively inactive White House in the coming three months when it comes to policy formation or enactment.
