U.S. and Venezuelan Officials Resume Talks Wednesday

Senior U.S. and Venezuelan officials resumed talks on Wednesday as Washington tries to push the Maduro regime to “competitive and inclusive” elections set for July 28.

  • The U.S. reimposed oil sanctions on Venezuela in mid-April, accusing Maduro of not fully complying with electoral guarantees he made in deals with the opposition.
  • A major block was his banning of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado from running against him. She has been replaced by Edmundo Gonzalez.
  • "We discussed a wide range of issues and continued to urge competitive and inclusive elections on July 28 in Venezuela," a White House National Security Council spokesperson said.
  • Maduro will struggle to overcome what polls indicate is a roughly 20-point deficit to Gonzalez.
