- The Conservative Party conference continues, formerly an event that would have garnered much market interest but is now largely irrelevant.
- Irrespective of what happens at the conference, the new leader will not be in place until after the Budget (which is scheduled for 30 October).
- At the conference each of the remaining four candidates will speak for 20 minutes with votes held next week by MPs (9/10 October) to narrow the field down to the final two candidates.
- Party members will then have until 31 October to vote for their preferred candidate (assuming their opponent doesn’t drop out) with the new leader announced on 2 November – three days after the Budget.
- Given how much the Conservative party’s vote share fell the general election, the leader will only really matter if the Labour government shoots itself in the foot in the coming years.
