UK Labour Party Targets Clean Energy

POWER

The UK Labour Party’s manifesto includes a pledge for the party to work together with the private sector to double onshore wind capacity and to triple solar power capacity, the document showed.

  • The party also plans to invest in CCS projects, hydrogen and marine energy as well as supporting long-term energy storage expansions.
  • Labour intends to create a publicly-owned clean power firm, Great British Energy and to capitalise the new company with £8.3 billion over the next parliament.
  • “Great British Energy will partner with energy companies, local authorities, and co-operatives to install thousands of clean power projects, through a combination of onshore wind, solar, and hydropower projects. We will invite communities to come forward with projects, and work with local leaders and devolved governments to ensure local people benefit directly from this energy production,” it said.
  • The party also plans an energy system reform and the introduction of a carbon border adjustment mechanism.
  • Labour also plans to extend the lifetime of existing nuclear plans as well as maintaining a strategic reserve of gas power stations to ensure security of energy supply.
  • Regarding fossil fuels, the party does not plan to explore new fields and will not be granting new coal licenses.
