POWER: UK On Track to Determine Regional Energy Goals to Reduce Queue

POWER

The UK government is currently translating national energy goals into regional goals in order to rearrange the queue for grid connections and generation projects, Chris Stark, Head of Mission Control at Clean Power 2030 at the UK’s DESNZ said.

  • The UK government has set national power generation goals by technology following the advice from the country’s energy system operators. These goals are now being translated into regional goals to optimise the queue.
  • The government will then determine the best strategic projects in the queue as well as the project that have progressed the furthest to reduce the queue.
  • There are currently more generation project in the queue than the UK might ever need, Stark added.
  • Establishing policies early, building out the network and grid connections accelerating the speed for route to market for clean energy are key to achieve the UK’s clean power 2030 targets.
  • The UK Clean Power 2030 Action Plan aims to achieve its target of at least 95% of clean power by 2030.
  • As of late January, NESO has halted accepting new power grid projects for the queue.
