UK: PM Starmer-'Many Of The Decisions We Must Take Will Be Unpopular'

UK

PM Sir Keir Starmer delivering his keynote address at the Labour party conference. Largely 'big picture' in nature, Starmer maintains his stance since the election that the gov't will have to make 'unpopular' decisions. Starmer says to Labour members, "...deep down, I think you also know that our county does need a long-term plan and that we can’t turn it back. I understand many of the decisions we must take will be unpopular. If they were popular - they’d be easy”.

  • Starmer: "We will get the welfare bill down because we will tackle long-term sickness and support people back to work."
  • Hinting at the already well-telegraphed tax rises expected in the budget, Starmer says 'the close of thrilling the black hole in public finances that will be shared fairly'. Adds the 'desire for lower taxes and good public services does not mean that the iron law of properly funding policies can be ignored.'
