UK: Washington And London Eye Trade Agreement Ahead Of Election Year

Politico has reported that US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are, "preparing a 'foundational' U.S. / U.K. trade agreement designed to be wrapped up before both men face re-election next year."

  • According to a draft plan prepared by the United States Trade Representative, seen by Politico, negotiations, "are scheduled to start this month with the initial set of chapters wrapped up by spring of next year."
  • Politico reports that the outlined deal does not contain the market access required for a WTO-grade free trade agreement but goes, "much further than anything considered in public so far," with enhanced provisions on agriculture, labour, supply chains, and digital trade.
  • Inking a deal on trade with Washington will be a major coup for Sunak as his Conservative party struggles to overcome negative polling sentiment.
