UN Envoy Warns NATO Of Risk Of 'Direct War w/Russia'

RUSSIA

Wires carrying comments from Russia's representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya, who tells the Security Council that if the West allows Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes by Ukraine against Russia then NATO states would be 'conducting direct war with Russia'. Nebenzya: 'NATO will be a direct party to hostilities against a nuclear power. I think you shouldn't forget about this and think about the consequences'.

  • The comments build on those from President Vladimir Putin on 12 Sep that warned of a 'significant change' in the conflict if the West allows Ukraine to launch long-range missile attacks on sites in the Russian Federation (see 'SECURITY: Biden Meets Starmer As Putin Warns Of 'Significant Change' In Conflict', 0822BST).
  • This is not the first time that Russian officials have issued such warnings about nuclear escalation. As such for the West Putin's red lines on the conflict remain a 'known unknown' in that NATO is aware that it does not know at what point its support for Ukraine would tip Russia into major retaliatory action against the alliance directly.
