Unemployment Rate Stays Unchanged, Finance Minister Defends Budget

  • Lidove Noviny reported that the Czech presidency of the EU is trying to rally member states behind a proposal to cap natural gas prices at EUR220/MWh. Diplomatic sources told the newspaper that the proposal may be rejected at the meeting of energy ministers next Tuesday due to resistance from a group of countries led by Germany.
  • Finance Minister Zbynek Stanjura defended the recently adopted 2023 spending plan, noting that "if there is no new shock, the budget is realistic." He pointed to difficulties with finding support for savings in both houses of parliament, adding that the government prioritised helping households over faster debt reduction.
  • Prime Minister Petr Fiala recommended Tomas Pojar to the position of the National Security Adviser. The Cabonet will discuss creating the position at its next meeting, after it was unanimously recommended by the State Security Council yesterday.
  • Czechia's unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 3.5% in November. The number of job vacancies fell to 292.0k from 297.4k recorded in October, while the number of jobless people increased to 257.2 from 255.8.
