Union Membership At New Low

The ABS reported that in August 12.5% of employees were union members, 20% of all employed were casual and 8% contractors.

  • Union membership reached a new record low at 12.5% compared with 19.5% 10 years ago and 43.1% in 1988. Women accounted for 54% of members. The highest membership was in education with 30% followed by public administration at 23%. Previously strong areas of union membership such as transport, construction and manufacturing saw significant falls in the number of members. (The Australian)
