US DATA: Second Month Of Stalled Progress In Dispersion Metrics

  • By our calculations, 32% of ~190 categories across the entire CPI basket saw price increases of >3% Y/Y, stalling recently having touched a recent low of 31% in June. It compares to the 2019 av of 24% and a longer term average of 19%.
  • This recent stalling was a little more prominent in core items however.
  • 17% of ~70 items across core goods increased >3% Y/Y vs 14% in June. It won’t cause concerns though as it’s broadly back at pre-pandemic levels (18.5% in 2019).
  • Core services continue to prove sticky though, with their share increasing further to 67% vs 63% two months prior.  This share averaged 38% in 2019.
