US Domestic Natural Gas Demand Hits Record During Cold Snap

US homes and businesses used a record amount of natural gas Jan. 16 and demand for heating as power generation surged, according to Reuters.

  • US gas demand reached 167.8 bcf/d, according to LSEG, topping the previous daily high of 162.5 bcf/d in Dec. 2022.
  • Meanwhile, the arctic blast cut output to a 13-month low by freezing wells.
  • Output fell by 17 bcf/d from Jan. 8-16 to 90.6 bcf/d on Jan. 16, the lowest since Dec. 2022.
  • 1 Bcf is enough to fuel around 5m US homes, Reuters said.
