US Drafts List of 60 Venezuelans for Possible Sanctions: Reuters

OIL

The US has drafted a lit of 60 Venezuelan government officials and family members who could be sanctioned, according to Reuters sources.

  • The proposed list singled out officials from Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), the Supreme Courts, and the counterintelligence police.
  • The CNE proclaimed Maduro as the winner of the July 28 election without revealing vote tallies.
  • It was not immediately clear whether any industry sanctions would accompany them.
  • Washington’s options for further sanctions are narrow. After Venezuela’s election five years ago, the US implemented severe measures which hit the country’s oil output.
  • Washington already removed the general license allowing Venezuela to freely export its oil. Venezuela now must rely on licenses granted to companies on a case-by-case basis.
