US LNG Cargoes to Asia Set Record via Cape

LNG

US LNG cargoes to Asia via the Cape of Good Hope hit a record in July, despite easing restrictions at the Panama Canal, Platts said.

  • A total of 49 US LNG cargoes headed to Asia via the Cape of Good Hope in July, up from 37 in June. This is the highest monthly flows since Platts began recording in 2010.
  • Cape flows of US LNG have continuously broken records since March, whereas flows via the Panama Canal have stalled.
  • Just one Asia-bound cargo crossed the Panama Canal in July.
  • The Panama Canal has lifted some transit restrictions due to improving water levels at Gatun Lake.
  • This has increased the slots offered to LNG vessels to three per booking period (Period 1A and Period 2).
  • No Asia-bound US cargo transited the Suez Canal – still under threat from attacks by the Houthis.
