US Manufacturing Output Sluggish, Hampering Diesel Use: Reuters

US manufacturing production has barely increased from pre-pandemic levels, explaining the ongoing weakness in diesel demand, according to Reuters.

  • US flash PMIs were stronger than expected in June, with manufacturing rising to 51.7 (cons 51.0) from 51.3.
  • Reuters added that real manufacturing value-added has increased at a compound annual rate of only 0.7% since 2018, well below US whole-economy growth of 2.1%.
  • Despite a pickup in manufacturing, it has been too slow to lift diesel demand sufficiently, with the EIA not forecasting a significant growth in distillate consumption in 2024 or 2025.
  • Around 75% of diesel and fuel oil consumption is from road and rail freight haulers, as well as other industrial users, Reuters said.
