US Official Aims to Support Guyana Border Dispute

A US defense official is in Guyana Monday/Tuesday to help ease the dispute between the nation and Venezuela over the oil rich Esequibo region.

  • The US is pushing for "U.S.-Guyana bilateral defense and security partnership in support of regional stability," the embassy said in a statement.
  • Guyana and Venezuelan leaders met in December, agreeing to not use force or escalate tensions over the dispute.
  • A British warship deployed off Guyana late December flared tensions, angering Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and its ally Brazil.
  • Western diplomats have urged Brazilian officials to try and ease tensions and help discussions over the dispute.
