US Senate Committee Open to F-35 Sale if Turkey Dumps Russian S-400s

  • US Senate Committee Chair on Foreign Relations Mendez says he would not be opposed to selling F-35s to Turkey if the issue of the S-400 missile defence system the country purchased from Russia is resolved
  • The senator reiterated his longstanding view that the S-400 system must go, adding however that further steps must also be taken by Erdogan's Govt
  • Also added that in his view the recent charm offensive by the Turkish president will most likely fail, despite efforts to normalise relations with the EU, US and regional countries. - Ahval
  • Its worth noting that possession of the S-400 missile system is the reason for CAATSA sanctions on Turkey's defense industry and removal of the sanctions would support both the sector and bilateral relations
