USDCAD Climbs As Oil Slides, Yield Differentials Widen

  • USDCAD continues to set new session highs, latest 1.3585 as CAD outperformance to high growth beta peers fades with oil sliding.
  • The pair ultimately made light work of resistance around 1.352 seen after Friday’s employment releases, pushing above a trendline resistance intersecting at 1.3560 to open 1.3646 (Nov 29 high).
  • Negative Can-US yield differentials have continued to widen since the US ISM service beat, with a 2Y differential at -56bps down more than 10bps since briefly being supported by Powell last week. Ahead of the BoC on Wed, it is back at levels after the Oct 26 BoC surprise downshift to a 50bp hike.
