VdL: Commission Authorises New Vaccine Contract With CureVac

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweets: "Today we authorise a new contract to buy doses of a future COVID19 vaccine for Europeans produced by CureVac. This is the 5th contract. We have so far secured 1.2 billion doses of potential vaccines. We are committed to ensuring access to safe, effective & affordable vaccines."

  • The EU, and other international actors, remain locked in a vaccine race to gain priority access to the first effective COVID-19 vaccines approved by regulators and available to the market.
  • Without the passage of the EU's multiannual financial framework and the associated COVID-19 relief package, that allows the Commission to increase its Own Resources (capital raised itself, not by member states), who pays for any vaccine at the EU level remains unclear.
