Villar Says Fiscal & Monetary Policy Working In Coordinated Manner

  • BanRep Governor Leonardo Villar has reiterated (in a Bloomberg interview) that any subsequent decisions “will depend on the information we have at the time of the corresponding meeting.” However, Villar also noted that “it would really be very difficult to think that a downward decision could be made in July, that is something that we must look at very cautiously and this is what both the Finance Minister and I have announced.”
  • Speaking more broadly as we approach the first full year of a Petro government, Villar said “on the macroeconomic front, conditions have been quite favorable and, especially since October 2022, credibility has been gaining for various reasons, including the Government's commitment to the Fiscal Rule, decisions such as the price adjustment of gasoline, which is unpopular but necessary and convenient, and respect and harmony with the Board of the Banco de la República, which has been a characteristic of what has happened in recent months.”
  • “The economy is relatively calm, there is a slowdown process that we had foreseen and that we saw necessary, but from the macroeconomic point of view we are progressing well and fiscal and monetary policy are working in a harmonious and coordinated manner.”
