Xi Holds Talks w/Macron, EUCO Pres. This Morning

CHINA-EU

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to hold high-level phone calls with two senior European politicians this morning.

  • Firstly he holds a call with European Council President Charles Michel around 1030CET (0930BST, 1630CST).
  • He then talks to French President Emmanuel Macron from around 1130CET (1030BST, 1730CST).
  • The calls come as Xi is forced to try to open new avenues of communication with the EU as German Chancellor Angela Merkel moves closer to leaving office.
  • For years, Merkel has been the go-to person at the EU level if the Chinese gov't wanted to get things done. Following a videoconference between Merkel and Xi this week, Chinese officials confirmed Xi had referred to Merkel as an 'old friend' to China - an auspicious title only conferred on foreign politicians with particularly close links with Beijing.
  • Now, though, Beijing will be on the lookout for which high-ranking EU or member state leader it should seek to use as the primary point of contact for Sino-EU affairs, particularly on the issue of trade and investment.
