Xi & Philippines' Marcos Talk On Maritime Border Issues, O&G Exploration

CHINA

MNI (London)-Chinese state media reporting comments from Chinese President Xi Jinping following his meeting with his Philippine counterpart Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. Xi states that 'China is willing to continue to properly handle maritime issues with the Philippines in a friendly and consultative manner.'

  • Relations between China and the Philippines have been somewhat strained in recent years due to disputes over maritime boundaries in the South China Sea, in particular around the contested Spratly Islands.
  • Other comments from Xi: "Both countries should increase communication and cooperation in agriculture, infra, energy, and culture". "China is ready to restart oil and gas development talks." "China is ready to increase the import of fishery products and support Chinese firms to invest in the Philippines."
  • Marcos, who won the 2022 presidential election, is seen as trying to tread more of a fine line between the US and China. The US has long retained a sizeable military presence in the country. However, under former President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines shifted closer towards China, which has become a key economic partner for Manila.
