A new poll from YouGov shows Social Democratic Party head Olaf Scholz the clear favourite to be Germany's next chancellor, garnering 25% support when respondents were asked who they want to lead the gov't.
- In sobering reading for the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), just 10% of respondents said they wanted to see the party's chancellor candidate Armin Laschet succeed Angela Merkel at the chancellery. This puts Laschet level with Green candidate Annelena Baerbock and Free Democrat head Christian Lindner.
- YouGov poll: Preferred Chancellor [Head of Government]: Scholz (SPD-S&D): 25% (-1), Lindner (FDP-RE): 10%, Baerbock (GRÜNE-G/EFA): 10% (+1), Laschet (CDU-EPP): 10% (+2), Wiedel (AfD): 6%. +/- vs. 3-7 Sep. Fieldwork: 9-14 September 2021. Sample size: 1,816
