Canadian opposition Conservative Party leader, Pierre Poilievre, has stated in a press conference that he would retaliate against tariffs proposed by US President-elect Donald Trump "if necessary", describing the threat as "unfair, unprovoked and problematic."
- Poilievre: "We trade almost twice as much with the Americans as we trade with the rest of the world combined... President Trump yesterday made an unjustified threat of a 25% tariff on our already weak and shrinking economy. Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland were surprised... everyone else knew something like this was coming..."
- Poilievre: "Our economy is teetering on the brink of collapse and now we face this renewed threat. We need a plan to put Canada first. On the economy and on security..."
- Poilievre urges a joint effort with Prime Minister Trudeau to combat theeconomic fallout from new tariffs. "(1) [Trudeau] cannot go ahead with quadrupling the carbon tax... (2) [he must] cancel the energy cap... (3) he has to cancel all tax increases ... (4) finally he needs to end the buy America policies..."
- Poilievre says that "Trump has the right to put his workers and his nation's security first. I will put Canada's workers and security first."
- CDC notes in the most recent update of their poll tracker: "The Conservatives hold an 18-point lead over the Liberals and remain in a strong position to win a big majority government with the potential for a net gain of nearly 100 seats, mostly at the expense of the Liberals."
