POWER: Estonia Advances 600MW Nuclear Build

POWER

Fermi Energia has initiated the process to build Estonia’s first nuclear power plant, with a capacity of 600MW, applying to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications for a national spatial plan, it said today.

  • The plant will feature two 300MW small modular reactors, with the first reactor operational in 2H 2035. It is designed to cover Estonia's minimum electricity demand during the summer months and will be built by GE Hitachi.
  • From 2027-29, the selected site will undergo detailed studies. Fermi Energia aims to apply for a construction permit in 2029, with construction set to begin in 2031.
  • However, the first phase of the planning process, focused on location selection, is expected to take place between 2025-27, including relevant studies and evaluations of potential sites.
