COAL: German, French Australian Coal Imports on Track to Drop in 4Q

Australian coal exports to Germany and France are on track to drop on the quarter towards the end of the 4Q24, with US exports to Germany following a similar trend, while US coal exports to France are expected to increase sharply, latest data Marcura show.

  • Germany is set to import 127,000t of Australian coal in 4Q24, down from 164,390t in 3Q and lower than 181,475t in 2Q. The country imported around 197,000t over Jan-March 2024.
  • US coal exports to Germany are also down on the quarter at 391,570t compared to 491,000t in 3Q and much lower than 640,000t imported in 2Q.
  • In contrast, France is set to import 399,100t of Australian coal – dropping sharply from 512,690t in the 3Q and lower than 480,560t over April-June.
  • However, US coal to France exports are at around 265,510t in 4Q, up from 116,000t in the 3Q but lower than the 370,000t imported in the quarter previously.
  • On the year, Germany imported 669,865t of Australian coal up from just 83,000t brought in last year.
  • However, US coal imports have fallen to around 1.98 mn/t from 2.88 mn/t in 2023.
  • But French Australian imports are currently at 1.55 mn/t so far in 2024 compared to 244,000t in the previous year.
  • While, US coal exports to France are at around 1.299 mn/t from 1.617 mn/t in 2023.
