MNI BRIEF: Canada Says Has Leverage Against Trump Tariffs
MNI (OTTAWA) - Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister says her nation has "leverage" to use against 25% tariffs proposed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and is taking ideas to rework the retaliatory measures that worked during Trump's first term to her cabinet colleagues Friday.
“We need to show the American people and folks around Trump that there will be real consequences, that Canada has a deep affection for the U.S., has a strong relationship, is its closest ally, but also, we have leverage,” Melanie Joly said while heading to a cabinet meeting in remarks shown on the CTV network.
"My job is to work on retaliatory tariffs as we speak, and that’s why I’m going into the cabinet room. My job is to make sure we’re ready should President elect Trump decides to go on with his tariffs,” she said. She also repeated a line about standing up for Canada that ministers used during Trump's first term before imposing dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs.
