MNI BRIEF: US Budget Deficit At $1.15T Thru Feb
MNI (WASHINGTON) - The U.S. budget deficit has grown to USD1.147 trillion in the first five months of the fiscal year, up USD318 billion or 38% from the same time last year, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.
The month of February saw a record deficit of USD307 billion, a 4% increase from last year's February. In February, receipts came in at record USD296 billion and outlays saw a record USD603. The interest on the public debt has amounted to USD478 fiscal year to date, up 10% compared to 2024. Receipts from custom duties at USD38 billion were up 12% compared to last year.
Through February, there are not many categories in the Treasury Department's Monthly Treasury Statement that stand out showing significant decreases due to spending cuts from the Department of Government Efficiency, according to Treasury officials.
The 2025 fiscal year to date outlays stood at a record USD3.039 trillion and receipts were a record USD1.893 trillion.
