A global push to decarbonise air travel may push Brazil towards becoming a global centre for SAF, Bloomberg said.

  • Brazil is becoming a magnet for SAF-related investment given its position as the second-largest producer of ethanol, a component of SAF.
  • Brazil is an agricultural powerhouse and has an abundance of crops to produce biofuels, giving it an advantage over the likes of the US>
  • “For every liter of SAF, we need 1.7 liters of ethanol, so the best place to produce would be in the origin, in Brazil,” Ricardo Mussa, CEO of sugar and ethanol company Raizen said.
  • Production of SAF in Brazil could reach around 50 billion litres by 2030, according to an Airbus, LATAM, and MIT prelim study. This is similar to US output.
  • Brazilian sugar cane has lower carbon emissions, making it more effective than other crop-based alternatives.
  • The market in Brazil remains nascent, but Honeywell belies 4-5 new plants could come to the market very soon.
